Throughout his career, furniture designer Hans J. Wegner worked tirelessly to materialize his vision for the perfect chair. Through his work and his keen eye for both aesthetics and function, he created a range of considered chairs that have long since achieved iconic status around the world.
A fine example of the ingenuity of his craftsmanship and his understanding of form and proportions is the CH30 dining chair, which he designed in 1954. Having been out of production for a number of years, this archetypal Wegner chair is now being brought back into Carl Hansen & Søn’s extensive collection of design classics.
The CH30 was the result of a continuous study of form, and like several of his other chairs, it showcases Wegner’s signature style: his organic design and exceptional craftsmanship can be seen in sophisticated details such as the cruciform cover caps on the slightly arched backrest. Thanks to the relatively wide form-pressed padded seat and
the curved oval backrest – which tilts backwards slightly to ensure ideal back support – the chair combines a simple aesthetic with a high level of comfort. The rear legs have an elegant, backward sloping shape which ensures optimal stability while enabling users to enjoy the experience of this accomodating chair.
In the CH30, Wegner created a stylish chair that fits perfectly into a modern context in both private homes and public spaces with its balanced proportions and stringent design. The CH30 is designed without armrests, so it works perfectly around a table – it only takes up limited space and can be tucked under the table.
The CH30 chair has been recreated in close collaboration with Hans J. Wegner’s Design Studio according to his original working drawing. The only adjustment is an extra two centimeters in height, making the chair more comfortable for the people of today, who are generally taller than those of 1954.
