The Spanish Chair

Fredericia has its roots in traditional craftsmanship based on a deep understanding of natural materials like vegetable tanned leather and solid wood. We invite you to join us on a tour behind the scenes, when Børge Mogensen’s iconic Spanish Chair is made with endless passion and the greatest attention to detail.

Solid pieces of oak from sustainable European forests are refined and processed; creating the elegant frame for the iconic Spanish Chair.

Each part of the timber frame for the Spanish Chair is assembled with wooden dowels and bonded together under high pressure to ensure strength and stability for decades to come.

The exquisite leather hides are 100% vegetable tanned and dyed in large wooden drums following ancient traditions handed down through generations of craftsmen. This meticulous process take more than 4 weeks and creates a rich and beautiful saddle leather, which over time develops an extraordinary patina that cannot be achieved in any other way.

Razor-sharp cutting irons are employed in creating the distinctive silhouette of the hides; guaranteeing the utmost precision.

It takes a steady hand to colour the leather edges of the Spanish Chair.

The leather parts are marked by hand to create a straight seam on the chair. These are refined with detailed stitch work, performed by skilled artisans on traditional machinery from the late 1930s.

The assembly of frame and leather parts takes place at our workshop in Fredericia.

The entire production requires fourteen days of patient craftsmanship and passionate dedication to complete the iconic Spanish Chair.
